Ethnographic Research Study

Tools Used: Research Databases (APAPsycNet, Science Direct, Google Scholar, etc.). Lucidchart. YouTube.
Elements: Data Analysis. Thematic Coding. Claim Identification. Theoretical Framework Construction. Research Findings Presentation.

Project Overview
Qualitative study on how learning is generated through a filmed social experiment produced by the company, Jubilee. Through observational analysis and pulling from epistemological and ontological view points, my collaborators and I each pulled out different claims through different learning science lenses- Constructivism, Social Constructivism, Situated Learning and Constructionism; I analyzed from the situated learning perspective. Post-claim construction, we compiled data and hypotheses, discussing the inter-relations between the various learning theories and implications. Findings were then formatted into a 60 page report.
Design Components
  • Research design for qualitative study via observation of human-human interactions in YouTube video
  • Visualizing data into understandable framework given understanding of visual design principles and cognitive design
  • Primarily visual presentation to allow for more accessible and understandable presentation of research given findings
Research Components
  • Research proposal generation and presentation, including our team's observation site, methods, and purpose
  • Observation journaling and review from particular theoretical perspective
  • Thematic coding for pattern detection and analysis
  • Analysis reported during and after observations via analytic memos
  • Claim generation from perspective of situated learning theories. Application of sociological, linguistic, and learning science theories
  • Multiple theoretical framework constructions- single theoretical perspective and framework concluding findings and implications for multiple theoretical perspectives
  • Personal bias and influence analysis to ensure validity of observational neutrality
