VR Cosmos Simulation

UX Design. UX Research. Co-Design.

Tools: Meta Quest. Google Workplace. Dovetail. Qualtrics.

Project Overview
UX and Learning Designer for a virtual reality simulation on space (Cosmos), which currently includes a moon phase simulation and will later add an eclipse and seasons simulation. In addition to being part of the design team, I've been spearheading co-design and user research efforts.
Obstacles
Problem:
Users didn't understand why they couldn't see the Moon when they adjusted the Moon to be on the far side of the Earth

Resolution:
Creating a Moon Navigator tool which would tell them that the Moon was hidden from view and engaging them in exploratory learning and trial-and-error practices.
Research Responsibilities
  • Leading user research with students and teachers throughout design process
  • Designing user research study protocols, measures, and instruments- including survey items and open questions as well as observations
  • Analyzing data for thematic insights and deciding which themes to implement depending on user needs and project goals
  • Reporting findings back to stakeholders and documenting design decisions and iterations
Design Responsibilities
  • Conceptually designing and mapping VR environment, interactions, level design, and objectives
  • Running co-design sessions with students, teachers, and other stakeholders in various formats including focus groups and dyads
  • Making design decisions according to stakeholder needs and purposes of use, VR affordance leveraging, and educational standards
  • Designing learning assessments for in-VR and post-VR session to understand learning impact in addition to usability issues
  • Performing market analysis on current moon phase and outer space simulations in both 2D and 3D formats
  • Implementing research-centered and human-centered design practices into VR experiences
